by Jennifer Dennard

Marketing information services firm J.D. Power and Associates has published the results of its seventh annual Marine Engine Competitive Information Study SM. Conducted between September and November 2007, the study’s results are based on responses from 9,718 boaters who registered new crafts between June 2006 and May 2007.

The study rates 11 brands of EFI inboard, 4-stroke EFI outboard, 2-stroke DI outboard and EFI sterndrive on such criteria as reliability, fuel economy, starting ease, quietness at cruise, shifting smoothness, lack of exhaust fumes and ability to rapidly accelerate. Engine quality is also taken into consideration.

Mercury and Evinrude led in the outboard DI 2-stroke segment; while Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki ranked highest in the outboard EFI 4-stroke segment. Volvo Penta, followed by MerCruiser, led the sterndrive EFI segment. Pleasurecraft Engine Group (PCM) ranked highest in the inboard EFI segment, followed by Marine Power.
