Two years ago, Yamaha introduced its VX line of personal watercraft (PWC), which boasted entry-level prices but with performance features and 4-stroke engine technology that went above and beyond what had previously been found in the category. For 2007, Yamaha has introduced the VX Cruiser ($8,299), a PWC that combines the afforda Yamaha-VX-Cruiserbility of the VX line with the comfort of Yamaha's FX Cruiser. On daylong test drive on Lake Allatoona in Georgia's Red Top Mountain State Park, the lengthy Cruiser seat lives up to its reputation, providing plenty of comfort, whether you're in the driver's seat or riding as a passenger. Performance is excellent for the price category, with crisp acceleration and a top speed of around 53 mph. Other notable features include multifunction instrumentation, an extended reboarding platform and a remote-controlled security system. The VX Cruiser also features Yamaha's compression-molded fiber composite hull, which is colored to match the paint's exterior color, making scratches less apparent. Minor drawbacks include a front storage space that's on the small side and a reverse mode that's a tad difficult to reach. But overall, the stylish VX Cruiser ranks as a superb value and a great option for watercraft enthusiasts who are looking for the comfort of the Cruiser seat but aren't ready to pony up an extra $3K for the FX Cruiser model. www.yamaha-motor.com.
