If you spend a lot of time
cruising or fishing, sooner or later you're going to face the frustration of the shallows, where
you can't get where you really want to go without running around. That's why we've fallen in love
with the Ocean Kayak Venus 11 and the Scrambler XL - they let us go almost anywhere. These are
recreational sit-on-tops, not hardcore river runners, designed to handle anything from dead calm to
breaking surf. The roto-mold construction makes them almost indestructible (and we've tried), but
light enough to handle with ease (the Scrambler XL weighs only 49 pounds; the Venus 11, a mere 40).
There's abundant storage on each boat, including a secure dry storage area for keys, cell phones,
and such. They're not tiny - the Venus 11 has a LOA of 10 feet 8 inches, and the Scrambler XL
measures 11 feet 6.5 inches - but their usefulness has earned them each a permanent space on board
when we're heading out where the water may get shallow. The prices are right, too. The Scrambler XL
